Poetry Games
I’ve always enjoyed games, especially word games. Same goes for poetry, so what could be better than poetry games? The first game came to me in an email—a word-a-day email to be precise.
Crambo
This game reminds me of one of the games on the show “Who’s Line is It Anyway?” called Irish Drinking Song. In the Irish Drinking Song game, they are given a topic and the first person sings a line and the next person sings a rhyming line, and the next person sings the next line and the fourth person sings a rhyming line to complete the first verse of the song. In the game Crambo you’ll find a similar rhyming requirement.
MUST HAVES
--One or more people to play.
--Rhyme!
COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?
There seem to be two variations, but feel free to create your own version:
--Version #1: One person says a word and the next person thinks up a rhyming word
--Version #2: The game players create a poem. First person says a line, and the next comes up with a line that rhymes with the first. The third person creates the third line of the poem, and the fourth makes up a fourth line that rhymes with the third line, and so on. This is an example of this version using an aabb rhyme scheme. Choose whatever rhyme scheme you like before you begin. You can continue until you all agree you’ve come to an organic ending, or you can determine the amount of lines or stanzas before you begin.
Poetry Machine
This next game I found when I was researching a newsletter about word play.

--Choose whatever poetry form you like, fill in the blanks and create!
Poetry Slam
This poetry game I learned about on WDC, but you can play online or in real life.
MUST HAVES
--One or more people to be moderators (give out the round parameters of form, topic, etc. and to time the round).
--One or more people to declare the winners (can be the above mentioned moderators, the nonparticipants, etcetera).
--Two or more participants.
COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?
--The number of rounds.
--Forms and topics of the SLAM poetry.
--How long each round will be.
--Play online or in real life.
--Wait until you find a slam to attend or just start one yourself!
