Challenge Yourself

When I first registered at Writing.com I felt this urge to write and I finally found the perfect place to play. Once I dipped my toes, er pen, in and shared my work, I started exploring and seeing what I could use to perfect my poetry practice. My favorite way was to utilize the challenge of contests. Not just here and there, like I had done at the beginning, but I went gangbusters and entered as many contests as I could. I added a bunch of new items in that time, and learned a lot more about poetry.

Today I want to share some poetry challenges, and challenge you to accept one or more of them.

Challenge of Contests

So what makes contests any different than poetry prompts? The contest deadline creates, well, a deadline for completing your poem. No partial work waiting for legs and arms, but a fully created and polished piece finished and waiting for review.

Here are some of my favorite recurring contests at WDC:
"The Writer's Cramp - Poetry Week [13+]
Stormy Lady has a monthly contest in the Poetry Newsletter: "Stormy's poetry newsletter & contest [ASR]
WDC has some official contests, many which are for poetry: "Official WDC Contests [E]
"Invalid Item
And finally one just for newbies: "Invalid Item

Comments on last month's newsletter:

Regarding:"Married in New York [E]
Comment: I wrote this poem as a Butterfly Form poem, after reading your newsletter dated April 13th: "Married in New York" . It's my first attempt and, whilst small, took a lot of brain power! It was good fun, though.

I'm so happy you were inspired to write it. I enjoyed it when I read it. Write on!

From: oldmonty
Comment: Thank you for another fine news letter Red.

Thank you, Monty!

From: thebusman
Comment: I like to thank the editor for picking two of my poems for this newsletter. Cathy&Ray Smile

It doesn't happen often, but I like to share good poetry, and it helps if it follows the theme I'm working on. Write on!
