Hi, I'm sybaritescribe.
Welcome to this issue of the Poetry newsletter. While I'm not a regular editor of this newsletter, I enjoy the opportunity to write about this facinating written form. Please tell me what you liked or didn't like in my column, or about a topic you'd like to see discussed. This newsletter is for eveyone interested in Poetry, Poets and poetic expression.

Poetry Contests Anyone?
Being rather new to the wonderful world of poetry--writing poems, that is--I'd been hesitant to enter my offerings in some of the poetry contests that exist on site. From what I've read of other members' poetry, I always thought Wow, they're so much better than I. Then, I was afforded the chance to enter a Poetry contest sponsored by and held for members of "The Talent Pond" . And I did well ... at least, much better than I ever considered.
My point is that you never know how your work will be treated unless you take the chance and put it out there for consideration by others. If at first you don't succeed, try another contest. Each person's (judge's) opinions and likes are different. I had enough success that encouraged me to continue writing poems and entering a contest or two, or several. 
Today (Mar 17) I checked out the "Writing Contests @ Writing.Com" and discovered seven currently running Poetry contests listed. Using the search window at the top of the page, I found several more active contests. But be sure to check the details of a particular contest before you take the time to write and enter. It may be that the contest is no longer active, despite the forum still being in existence and listed in the Search results. If you hover your mouse cursor over a listing and the Updated date is more than 30 days old, it may no longer be an active contest. Check with the forum's owner to be sure.
Many groups also sponsor poetry contests for their own members.
I suspect there are no shortage of poetry contests for you to exercise your poetic wings. Try it; you may just find another outlet for your creativity, and reap a few rewards along the way.

From sahanasundar: Your favorites are my favorites too. I love poetry. It lives somewhere in the corner of my heart and comes out occasionally. I enjoyed your newsletter. I too have encountered the same reaction of raised eyebrows when I say I write poetry.
From armorbearer: The same dedication, education, and consideration needs to be given to poetry writing if it is to be shown to the public in any venue. New writers of poetry look to see what someone else has written and often take this as a pattern which if the writer has just splattered emotions on the page is not a good example of poetry.
Learning the basics of poetry writing is important to anyone who wants to write poetry.
From yusuf1: Hi; I enjoyed this newsletter. Like yourself, I have ignored poetry for years. I still don't really have a passion for it but I do write the odd poem now and again. I find editing poetry particularly difficult because it may be technically perfect but still not "talk" to me. Someone else, however, may find the same poem very inspiring. In that sense it is very subjective. So, to answer your question; If I show someone a poem, it's usually to express emmotion or feeling, like to a woman I'm courting. Other then that, I don't expect much recognition or praise for it.

From sum1swriting: Jace, I too have become entranced with poetry, and write far more of that than anything else. One of the fun things with poetry, is shaping it. I read a poem on WDC that inspired me to write similar poems. Shape poetry is fascinating really, writing a poem about a physical object, formatting the words to form that object. This is the original that inspired me, mine are in my port, should you want to have a look. (I'll plug the original, but not mine, since I consider mine to be copies, in a way).
From deannarich: Come on in and join the fun! Multiple prompts given each daily round and a "No Prompt" round once per week! Gift Points awarded to daily winners and Merit Badges to weekly winners. This is a great and rewarding way to polish up your poetry skills.
From frabjous: Like you, I get the raised eyebrows when I 'confess' to people that I write poetry. I think you must hit people in the head, HARD, with it! Shout it out or it will not be appreciated or noticed. Poetry can be just as exciting and fun to read as a short story or any other form. I try to write poems not just for myself but for others to enjoy. One way to "show and tell" is to bring a hard copy picture with you, lol. Very effective sometimes. People shy away from the esoteric poem and what they cannot understand. Don't you? Jackie Casey

From anmolidea: I like your newsletter. Yes, people don't respect poets these days. But I still enjoy reading old and new poems as well. I try to write poems but I am not so good with them in comparison to writing articles or reviews.
